Paul Mazon (1874-1955) produced landmark prose translations of Homer, Aeschylus and Sophocles. The first edition of his complete Sophocles in two volumes dates from 1950 (vol.1 Les Trachiniennes, Antigone, Ajax; vol.2 Oedipe roi, Electre, Philoctète, Oedipe à Colone) and was reprinted in three volumes in 1955 (vol.1 Les Trachiniennes, Antigone; vol. 2 Ajax, Oedipe roi, Electre; Vol. 3 Philoctète, Oedipe à Colone) and then on a regular basis by Les Belles Lettres (Collection Budé) until the late 1990s. Mazon's translations were also published in one volume, without the ancient Greek text, by Le Club du livre in 1953, 1963 and 1969; by Le Livre de Poche in 1964 and by Gallimard in 1973 with a preface by Pierre Vidal-Naquet. Illustrated separate editions were also issued in the 1950s: Electre in 1951 illustrated by Roger Vieillard and Antigone in 1947 with 'eaux fortes' by Yves Alix, as well as Antigone and Oedipe roi in 1959 with a presentation by Jacqueline de Romilly. Mazon's translations were most recently reprinted by Les Belles Lettres with updated critical apparatus and revisions in paperback: Antigone (1991, 1997 and 2007), Oedipe roi (1994, 1998, 1999), Ajax (2001), and Philoctète (2012).
