Production notes:
First performance of the lost first version of the play, produced in the archonship of Isarchos, which won third prize (after Kratinos’ Putine and Ameipsias’ Konnos). It is likely that the text of the play as currently preserved is a partial revision that was never performed (as stated in Hypothesis 1 to the play). See Aristophanes, Clouds, ed. K.J. Dover (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1989), pp. lxxx-xcviii.
