Production notes:
We do not know when this play was performed. We know from Cicero (Tusc. Disp. 1. 2,3; Brut., 20, 79) that Ennius accompanied Marcus Fulvius Nobilior on the campaign against the Aetolians and siege of Ambracia in 189 BC. Ennius wrote this play to celebrate these exploits. The date range for performance given here is between 189 BC (the year of Ambracia's surrender) and the year of Ennius' death. It is therefore assumed in the date range offered here, that the play was performed at some time during this period. It is also assumed that the performance took place in Rome. This play was probably a 'fabula praetexta' (serious historical drama).
