Production notes:
This play was a fabula praetexta (serious Roman historical drama), based on the self-sacrifice of Decius Mus at the Battle of Sentinum in 295 BC. It is not known when it was produced. We learn from Cicero (Brutus 229) that Accius was producing tragedies by 140 BC. Therefore the date range for performance given here is set between 140 BC and the year of Accius' death c. 86 BC. It is assumed that the play was produced in Rome.
