Production notes:
We do not know when this play was first produced. It is parodied in Aristophanes' Georgoi and so must have been performed before the production of that comedy, between 424-2 BC. It may also have been quoted by Hermocrates at the Sicilian peace conference in 424 BC (TrGF5.1, p. 478-9, see also Collard, Cropp and Lee, Euripides Selected Fragmentary Plays I (Warminster, 1997), p. 125 and 144). The date range for performance given here is therefore up to a 10-year period before 425 BC (presuming Hermocrates would be quoted from a relatively recent play). It is assumed here that the performance wouold have taken place in Athens.
