We do not have precise dates for Pompeius Macer and there is some confusion over his identity. The date range offered here is based on the assumption that the Pompeius Macer who wrote the tragedy Medea was the contemporary and friend of Ovid who mentions him in his poetry (Ovid. Pont. 2, 10 and Ov. Am. 2, 18); therefore the dates are those of Ovid's lifespan. It is not known when or where this tragedy was performed. The performance venue given here is based on conjecture.
