      APGRD Notes
                      From the website (http://www.sju.edu/academics/cas/resources/effieandbarbarians/index.html):
The Classics Program is delighted to welcome Mary-Kay Gamel, Professor of Classics, Comparative Literature, and Theater Arts at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who comes to Saint Joseph’s University as Onassis Foundation Senior Visiting Scholar to teach a mini course, free of tuition fees and for no credit, entitled “Adapting Ancient Greek Drama to the Modern Stage.” The final project for this course taught from October 20-November 11 is three performances of EFFIE AND THE BARBARIANS, an adaptation of Euripides’ play Iphigenia among the Taurians, written and directed by Professor Gamel.
The students’ work in this mini course will consist not only of preparing and performing a full staging of the script, which was first performed at UCSC in spring 1995, but will also involve making changes to the script under Professor Gamel’s direction. In this way, students will not only learn about adapting ancient Greek drama to the modern stage, they will actually participate in the adaptation. Performances will be held at the Forum Theater (Campion Student Center) on Friday, November 12 (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday, November 13 (3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.)
